Connecticut state Sen. Len Suzio, R-13th District, says he will release “stunning” numbers showing that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s early release prison program has been a failure. The senator will release the numbers at a Monday news conference. Also referred to as risk reduction and second chance, the program was instituted by the governor and Under Secretary for Criminal Justice Policy and Planning Michael Lawlor, seven years ago and passed along party lines.
In a wide-ranging interview I had with the senator on the Brad & Dan Show with Brad Davis, the senator mentioned the latest incident in Hamden, where convicted felon K’waun Cole got into a shoot out with a Hamden police officer. Cole, who has an arrest record dating back to 2003, was part of an early release program.
In the interview, Suzio stated the numbers will show murderers, rapists and other violent criminals have been let out of jail before their sentences were up, under the early release program only to end up back in jail. Suzio stated the program should not be called “the risk reduction program” but the “risk exacerbation program.”
