Texas Gov. Rick Perry has wasted little time, jumping on the chance to lure Connecticut gun maker PTR Industries to the Lone Star State. I say, right on!

PTR Industries announced it is moving out of Connecticut, because of recent gun control legislation that bans many of the weapons it manufacturers. It is urging other state-based gun makers to do the same. Perry invited PTR to his state. I hope they move there.

As I have written before, all the Connecticut gun makers should follow suit and leave.

Of course, Connecticut’s Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, downplays the PTR move. In yet another myopic statement, the governor told reporters the other day, the Connecticut gun industry is not what it used to be. As usual, a foolish statement.

It is estimated that 9,000 jobs are directly or indirectly connected to jobs in Connecticut. They should all send a message and leave.

No doubt, that won’t disturb Dannel 88. He will claim he inherited this mess, dole out more “First Five Initiative” money, and remind us what a great governor he is. Perry, meanwhile, will provide the real reminder, of how a business-friendly state actually works.

Connecticut U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal’s call for background checks on anyone purchasing ammunition is right up his alley. The proposal is part of an overall gun control policy Blumenthal intends to announce.

Blumenthal’s first two years in the Senate have been nondescript. He has been in search of an issue in which to sink his teeth. Now with Joe Lieberman out of the way, Blumenthal becomes Connecticut’s senior senator. That will give him some clout. Combine that with the Newtown tragedy and the gun control measures Blumenthal has always advocated, and you have a spotlight on the national landscape Blumenthal so desperately craves.

When he was Connecticut Attorney General, the running gag was the most dangerous place in the state was between Dick Blumenthal and a camera. With the gun control debate now front-and-center, it just might be the most dangerous place in the U.S. Senate, with Dick Blumenthal around.

Connecticut 3rd District Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro said she voted against the bill, rescuing the nation from the “Fiscal Cliff,” because the rich were not taxed enough. “This legislation makes permanent a tax structure that benefits the wealthy- it provides permanent tax rates to the wealthy while only providing temporary tax credits to working and middle class families.”

DeLauro is a multi-millionaire through her husband Stanley Greenberg’s polling firm, Greenberg-Quinlan-Rosner. There is nothing stopping her or any other millionaire or billionaire upset that the increased tax rate wasn’t increased enough, from writing a check to the U.S. Treasury Department. I am sure the government would be appreciative of the gesture, in an effort to retire a $16 trillion and growing debt.

We are told the nation is turning more and more into a secular society. Isn’t it interesting, then, that during one of our lowest moments, we turned to prayer. Within hours of the news of the horrific crime in Newtown, prayer services were scheduled across the country. Churches were packed. The President of the United States, at an Interfaith service in Newtown, repeatedly quoted passages from the Bible and mentioned Jesus Christ on numerous times, during one of the most moving speech’s of his presidency.

Sign Outside Hardware Store and SNL

A sign posted outside of a hardware store in Torrington seemed to sum up the feelings of a nation: ‘Pray For Newtown.’ I am sure there are similar signs throughout the country. The normally comedic Saturday Night Live, opened with a rendition of “Silent Night.”

No one can explain the tragedy of Newtown, no matter how thorough the investigation. And Connecticut State Police and other investigators should be saluted for their thoroughness in this difficult probe. But as Newtown is inexplicable, it’s just as easy to explain prayer and God. Prayer is comforting. Prayer is nurturing. Prayer is meaningful. Prayer helps to sooth that which cannot be explained.

In a nation, which seemed to be turning secular, prayer helped to restore its equilibrium. A president hesitant to talk religion, invoked it liberally Sunday night. How encouraging. How hopeful.

This weekend, a nation united around prayer. It’s power should never be underestimated.

Here we go again. All of this country’s economic problems are the Republicans’ fault. The latest person to point the finger is Steven Lanza, economist for the University of Connecticut’s economic journal, The Connecticut Economy. In its winter issue, Lanza predicts Connecticut could lose 20,000 jobs, if the nation is allowed to go over the Fiscal Cliff. Then he takes the Republicans to the woodshed.

“Political analysts are cautiously optimistic that, in the wake of the president’s re-election and modest legislative gains for the Democratic Party, recalcitrant Republicans will negotiate an agreement to avert disaster,” Lanza wrote.

Yes, those “recalcitrant” Republicans.

I have respect for Lanza’s reports, but his bias shines brighter than the red ink on the deficit. He comes from academia, which always favors government spending more money. His university is exhibit A. Connecticut is going through a major budget crisis, while UConn is hiring personnel like a drunkin’ sailor.

Republicans are targeted for their opposition of tax hikes on the “rich.” Perhaps Lanza ought to look at what repeated tax hikes on the rich have done to his home state. The rich have fled or at least changed their address to out of state. Connecticut has gone through its largest tax hike in history. What’s the result? A ballooning budget deficit and long range forecasts of even deeper red ink.

Lanza and his ilk would serve the taxpayers well by writing a report on how much raising federal taxes on the rich would really rescue the nation’s financial crisis. And while he’s at it, he might want to investigate the result of repeatedly raising taxes on the rich in Connecticut. Sadly, my presumption is, he would probably say the tax hikes are not enough and we need more.
